Better Than A Hotel

Let’s face it, vacations can cost a lot of money and not the best values are to be had at hotels.  Even in luxurious five-star hotels, space is still limited to a room.  Rooms can get cramped and are not great places to relax after a long day at the beach or wandering around taking in the local culture and sites.

Like many, we too own fractional vacation property or time shares.  These can be a great value if held and used over time since they are essentially small apartments with all the comforts of home.   Most have kitchens and multiple bedrooms for privacy.

But timeshare ownership is not cheap.  Besides the cost of the timeshare itself, there are the annual maintenance dues to keep the furnishings and grounds up to date, insured, etc.   Since most of us exchange every year rather than go back to the same place, is there a better way?  You bet there is!

Many owners of vacation properties all over the world rent their properties out by the week, month, etc.  Some are very pricey, while others cost no more for the rental than the annual maintenance dues on a time share so why not consider an apartment or house rental for your next vacation?  The following links can provide excellent leads for finding a great vacation rental:

While some process may be high, don’t be afraid to contact the owner and negotiate, particularly if you plan to visit during the off season when there is little to no demand.

Another option is housesitting.  Many times, this involves care of a pet, grounds, etc., for the use of a home.  However, if you are willing to put in a little effort, the stay is often free and there are opportunities to stay in many places worldwide and even in some luxury homes.  Visit the following sites to explore:

Finally, and this option may be best for the younger, backpacker crowd (or young at heart), there are options to visit many countries in exchange for some labor working on projects such as renovations or on farms:

The quest to see the world and find sacred spaces has many possibilities.  Try out the above link and let us know of any special experiences you have along the journey so we can post your comments here!
