I'm Ted, the owner of Visionquest Excursions Travel. In many ways, I've been planning travel and crafting adventures for over 50 years, from the time I was 12 or 13 years old. Our parents traveled often, across the USA and internationally. Early on, I was assigned the task of "navigator," which meant that I was responsible for making our travel plans each day during our many coast to coast drives in the USA and throughout Europe. This involved planning the route, determining where we would stop and stay, and selecting any interesting sites to see along the way because our mom always wanted the trips to be educational. We even had GPS devices back in those days; we called them maps!
Perhaps like many of you, I also hold fond memories of extraordinary experiences during my upbringing, all of which influenced my passion for travel. One of the most exhilarating moments was when my siblings and I had the privilege of skipping nearly a full year of school to embark on a European adventure. It was my responsibility to meticulously plan each day's journey and provide turn-by-turn directions for our mom as she navigated. Planning each leg of that journey, deciphering foreign signs, and bridging language gaps wasn't just a necessity; it was a thrilling game. In those dusty diaries, I rediscover not just memories, but the seeds of my career. Europe wasn't just a destination; it was where I fell in love with the process of travel, the joy of planning, and the magic of connecting with new cultures. Every landmark felt like a treasure hunt, every border crossing a mini-thrill. I'd trace my finger across maps, plotting our next adventure, my heart swelling with the realization that the world was so much bigger, richer, and more fascinating than I ever imagined.
Recently, I stumbled upon the old diary I kept during that trip and was astounded by the breadth of what we were able to experience and learn. Those were the days before the European Union, when countries had distinct borders, a variety of currencies, and few English speakers to be found. Communicating with locals was a delightful challenge, and it added a unique layer of excitement to our travels. Imagine navigating cobbled streets in a quaint Italian village, gelato dripping down your fingers as you haggle for souvenirs in a broken, enthusiastic mix of Italian and hand gestures. That was the daily reality for my siblings and me when we spent a year exploring Europe as kids. Europe is nothing short of spectacular, with its rich history, diverse cultures, warm-hearted people, and breathtaking landscapes. I've returned to Europe dozens of times over the years and never cease to be amazed. Visiting Europe should undoubtedly be a must on everyone's bucket list.
